AFFF Spill at Hawaii Navy Base Alerts Public to Dangers of Fire Fighting Foam Chemical Exposure to Humans
A massive AFFF accident that occurred in November of last year is hitting news frequencies across the country and is alerting people to the true and present danger of AFFF chemicals to humans. The reason for the recent resurgence in coverage over the toxic spill is the release by the United States Navy of a video showing just exactly how the incident went down. According to local news reports, the now-released video shows over 1,300 gallons of Aqueous Film Forming Foam spilling out and leaking from the Navy’s Red Hill facility in Honolulu, Hawaii. More shocking, however, is the Navy’s findings from its investigation into the AFFF spill that have also recently been released to the public. According to the Navy, the reason for the terrible and toxic AFFF spill was “human error.” The Navy asserts that it hired a maintenance contractor that improperly installed an air vacuum valve during a modification to the facility’s AFFF system. That modification was made in April, 2022. The modification that was made to Red Hill’s AFFF system, in combination with the same maintenance contractor’s failure to disable AFFF concentrate pumps from “automatically starting prior to running tests on the fire suppression system” caused the AFFF spill in late November last year. According to reports, the maintenance contractor did not notice the AFFF leakage until about 20 minutes after it occurred.
In response to the dangerous AFFF chemical spill United States Senator Mazie Hirono issued the following statement: The Joint Task Force Red Hill investigation found that the hazardous AFFF spill at Red Hill was caused by human error and was preventable.
Aqueous Film Forming Foam Dangerous to Humans
The Red Hill AFFF spill is particularly horrific in light of the dangers of AFFF exposure to humans. AFFF contains harmful chemicals called per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, otherwise known as PFAS. PFAS can build up in the human body and cause serious diseases, such as cancers. Those who have been exposed to AFFFs, therefore, can get extremely ill over time and require medical intervention. If you are in Houston and you believe that you were exposed to AFFF chemicals and you are now seriously ill as a result, it is best to speak with an experienced Houston mass tort lawyer about your rights and options.
