Military Times Highlights Two Camp Lejeune Survivor Stories, Tragedy Of Camp Lejeune Toxic Contaminated Water Exposure Revealed

Faucet

It is well-known that the United States government exposed veterans and their family members to toxic and contaminated water at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. From the early 1950s through to the late 1980s, the U.S. federal government acknowledges that toxic chemicals, such as trichloroethylene, tetrachloroethylene, vinyl chloride, and benzine, were present in the water used by veterans and their families for drinking, washing, and everyday use. As a result of being exposed to the toxic chemicals that contaminated the water at Camp Lejeune, veterans and their family members have had lasting and dangerous health implications, such as cancers and other serious diseases.

Veterans and their family members who served or lived at Camp Lejeune and who have been diagnosed with a serious illness as a result of being exposed to the toxic and contaminated water there now have recourse against the government for their injuries. Under the PACT Act and Camp Lejeune Justice Act, signed into law in 2022, veterans and their family members who lived at Camp Lejeune from 1953 to 1987 and who have been diagnosed with a serious illness can apply for compensation. There is a two-year window to file a claim.

Highlighting the fact that there are options for veterans and their families who have suffered from being stationed at Camp Lejeune and exposed to the hazards there, Military Times reported on two stories involving those who have been injured at Camp Lejeune. Jerry Ensminger, a retired Marine master sergeant, lost his daughter to leukemia that stemmed from exposure to the toxic chemicals at Camp Lejeune. Ms. Ensminger’s daughter passed away at the age of 9 years old as a result of in utero and early childhood exposure to the chemicals at Camp Lejeune after battling leukemia for a difficult three years. Michael Partain, also highlighted by the Military news outlet, was born at Camp Lejeune. Mr. Partain was diagnosed with breast cancer and suffers from the illness as a result of being exposed to the chemicals at Camp Lejeune during his infancy and childhood. Mr. Partain is now an advocate for victims of toxic water exposure at Camp Lejeune.
